Introduction to Sports Massage: Why It’s Not Just for Athletes
Sports massage is often misunderstood as a treatment reserved solely for
professional athletes or those training for a marathon. However, in my
practice, I find that almost everyone can benefit from the techniques used
in sports massage.
At its core, sports massage is about understanding how movement affects the
body. Whether you’re sit at a desk for 8 hours a day, chasing after your
kids, or hitting the gym heavily, your body develops patterns of tension.
Repetitive strain—like typing or bad posture—can lock muscles just as
tightly as running a 10K.
Key Benefits
One of the primary goals of sports massage is to improve range of motion and
flexibility. By targeting the connective tissues and deeper muscle layers,
we can break down adhesions (knots) that restrict movement. This leads to
better posture and reduced risk of injury in daily life.
Another major benefit is improved circulation. The techniques I use encourage
blood flow to the muscles, which helps flush out metabolic waste products
like lactic acid and delivers fresh oxygen and nutrients to tissues,
speeding up recovery even from mental stress.
"Movement is medicine, and sports massage is the prescription that keeps
you moving freely."
- Ricardo Ruiz
So, don't let the name deter you. If you have a body and you move it (or
don't move it enough), sports massage can help you feel better, move better,
and live pain-free.
